2023 Girlily Fan Choice Awards – Meet The Nominees

The Girlily Fan Choice Awards was initiated to commemorate the people that bring the most light to the lives of our audience. Many women in this community have their own struggles and goals they vie for. It’s one of the thing that binds us together, but when all is said and done, we’ll always come together for a little bit of fun.

Our fan choice awards is sincere and light in the way our weekly hangouts are. The absence of one’s name on this list does not signify that they are not noteworthy or resilient in their own way. This is merely a confession, addressed to those we love the most. The nominees in every category were voted in by our audience and the winner goes to the one with the highest vote counts. As you go through this, I encourage you to read the blurb under each category, so you can understand the thought process behind each nomination. And now, without further ado, here are the nominees.

Face Card

Face card is not just a representation of beauty, nor should it be seen as such. The women in this category are beautiful no doubt, but beyond that, they are comfortable and confident in their own skin; with make-up and without, in the spotlight and beyond it.

Never To Be Caught Unfresh

Our audience is no stranger to the idea that it is important to look your best at all times, even in the comfort of your home. This is not necessarily to impress others, in reality, it is a form of self-care. The people in this category deliver without trying too hard. You can never catch them slipping. But more importantly, they exude the kind of grace that says “looking good is not a competition, its a lifestyle”.

Man After Our Heart

There is no rhyme or reason for this category. Our audience knows their men, and the one after their heart is by many definitions “a man written by a woman”. To our audience, this man is sweet, caring, funny, well-behaved and let’s not forget TDL – Tall, dark and handsome.

Hair Crush

Afro-hair holds a lot of significance in African history. For some it’s a reflection of beauty, for others, it’s a sign of resilience. Afro hairstyles have an even more interesting history. In Colombia during the slave era, for example, women would braid secret messages and escape routes into their hair. The result is usually a fascinating style, fit to be displayed in a museum. The dynamism of the African hair is one to be applauded, flexible enough to be worn on its own, resilient enough to hold thick braided styles, and adaptable enough to work with weaves and wigs. The women in this category fully reflect this dynamism. They are, in our opinion, the best representation of all the afro hair is capable of.

Queen Of The Red Carpet

There’s a lot of pressure on the red carpet whether celebrities agree to it or not. This award is not in any way intended to add to that pressure. The criteria isn’t necessarily, who does the most or who is the most beautiful. In our book, everyone delivers just by showing up and everyone is as beautiful as they come. The queen of the red carpet is one who shows up consistently in looks that transcend time. Dresses that are classy and beautiful today and will remain so years from now. The most important factor, the queen of the red carpet commands attention and wears these dresses with as much confidence as a queen.

Zaddie Material

We have daddies and then we have zaddies. We hate to get r-rated in this but these men are fine as hell. The older they get, the finer they get. The proverbial ageing like fine wine. Need we say more?

Woman Killing It In Business

Nigerian women deserve their flowers when it comes to entrepreneurship. When you look back to the time of our parents, you’ll find a ton of scenarios where women hold down the family (yet keep it on the low), thanks to their hard work and resilience. In any typical Nigerian market, the number of women you’ll find hustling come rain, come shine, is alarming and inspiring at the same time. The women in this category possess this same drive we see in Nigerian women. They are innovators in their spaces, they are go-getters and they are killing it against many odds. The most important fact though is that they are inspiring many women as they go.

Feminist We Love

There is a big misconception about feminism, that it is “a movement for women who have a personal vendetta against men”. In reality, the true definition of feminism is “the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes”. It is possible to be a man and to be a feminist. It is also possible to advocate for feminism without having even heard of the term. The women in this category exemplify and champion the equality of genders in their own way. Even more, they are an example of how women can grow when they are allowed to forge their own paths.

Young Trailblazer

Age is a very big barrier to entry that isn’t talked about as much as it should. Even if you have the greatest ideas, it’s very easy for the powers that be to write you off as being too young to execute them. The people in this category are breaking glass ceilings despite the unspoken roadblock. They are an inspiration to us all.

Humanitarian We Love

One of the core missions of Girlily is to promote the welfare of women. So when we see people promoting the welfare of humans in general, in their own way, we have no choice but to stan. The nominees in this category are givers. Bear in mind that giving is not just about money, it could also be the gift of time, of publicity and more, all for a greater good.

2022 Best Actress

If we had to watch 365 movies, 365 days a year, we wouldn’t tire of seeing these actresses on our screens. That’s the criteria for this award. The women in this category embody the story in a way that is a pure delight to watch. They’re that good.

2022 All-Time Favorite Movie

2022 brought a ton of movies but these are the ones we wouldn’t mind rewatching multiple times. Everything from the story, to acting, to picture was masterfully executed. Most importantly, it struck close to home.
