I have a confession… I’m a bit of a film addict. That’s what happens when both your parents introduce you to various movie genres before you can attempt to sit up on your own. Movies (and books) for me are a sort of release from the difficulties of life and an escape from the normalness of our universe. They let me travel between worlds and visit places I really can only dream of. So, I try to spend more than half my time either reading or watching movies(being an adult makes this really hard lol butt you make time for the things that are important to you). What this means is almost every week there are a mountain of things I try to watch and now I’m letting you all into my precious space and showing you all what’s on the watchlist for this week.
Wednesday
We’re starting this off with Wednesday. Almost everyone born in the 90s and early 2000s watched the Addams family and fell in love with it. I know the animation series that first aired on 14 September 1992 better than I know the live-action film that came before it(I also just found out there were more movies before the 1991 movie and wow. That’s really something). However, a certain portion of my childhood was given to the movies and the show. As I write this, I keep humming the theme song which is putting a massive smile on my face. When the ‘new’ animated movies came out in 2019 and 2021, my excitement was almost palpable. So imagine my joy when I first heard about Wednesday. Now I haven’t watched it yet. I haven’t had the time to watch it all at once, so I’ve been waiting. This weekend is going to be ALL ABOUT WEDNESDAY.
The Swimmers
I hate war stories. I hate war movies based on true stories. I really do- BUT- I am also completely in love with them. They tell of the type of horror no one would wish for, a horror many can only imagine. They are sad and heart-wrenching and they pull me in like nothing else. I saw a clip of The Swimmers on TikTok and immediately said, “I have to watch this NOW”. I quickly went to Netflix hoping every second of the way that it was already out, when I saw that it was I clicked play immediately and got sucked in. It was beautiful and it was painful. I wouldn’t call it the best movie out there but it did enough to make most people FEEL.
Black Lagoon
I watched a lot of anime growing up. I just didn’t know they were anime until I was maybe 14/15. They were just ‘cartoons’ to me up until then (Now I would fight anyone that calls anime a cartoon lol). I had always watched everything and I mean everything. There was no genre I didn’t watch so I thought it was time to finally try anime. That was the beginning. I spent the next few years binging and falling in love with it. I watched the ENTIRE Naruto Shippuden(500 episodes) in a month and just kept going. It’s been many months since I watched any anime. A lot has gotten in the way. Black Lagoon is my first step back to this love.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
This is a Bollywood sapphic movie and though it was not everything, it was something. The acting wasn’t great and the storyline could be touched up a bit but it told the story of what most queer people suffer. It showed a young child with a little crush getting mocked and bullied. It showed her praying to fix what was wrong with her. It showed her hiding who she was from everyone and everything. It showed her fighting her family who actively worked to marry her off. It’s a movie about hate. It’s a movie about acceptance.
Grey’s Anatomy (season 6)
Let me calm your racing hearts, I am not watching the ENTIRE season this week (I could though but *sigh*- adulting). I’m watching a few episodes in season six. This is actually a re-watch. I watched the entire thing in 2018. I think it was just at 15 seasons then. I didn’t expect to fall in love. I remember my mum and aunt watched it a lot when I was a kid but I was never allowed to. It made me curious, too curious. I knew one day I would watch it.
Grey’s anatomy is the reason I am now obsessed with medical shows. I’m rewatching because ever since I got up-to-date on the show I have missed having a bunch to watch at a go and I’ve missed the old characters and the old vibe. I always knew I would re-watch it. My partner being a complete Grey’s anatomy novice was the perfect excuse. We started a few months ago and now we’re in season 6! Thirteen more to go!
The Noel Diary
I downloaded this on Sunday the 4th because it’s a Christmas rom-com(I love feel-good movies) and because the two leads are actors I know and love. The female lead, Barrett Doss is in a show, Station 19(a spin-off of grey’s anatomy) and the character isn’t someone I would see in a romance movie so I would really love to watch her acting(and low-key judge it👀) in this movie. I’m excited about it. The male lead, Justin Hartley is the definition of eye candy. He was the superhero, ‘The Green Arrow’ in the series Smallville, many years ago. I thought he was a hottie then and time has only been good to him(if you know what I mean ;)) Now I watch any of his movies I know about.
The Handmaiden
This Korean drama was quite honestly a masterpiece. Amazing acting and an amazing storyline. So many things you don’t see coming and I have watched wayy too many movies. I always see shit coming. So this was spectacular. I loved the themes that came into play; you have abuse, poverty, in many ways prostitution and much more. More than that, I love how all of these injustices were dealt with. It was beautiful. Karma really is everything.
The Bold Type
This is another re-watch for me. I’m in season 1 episode 4 and it is just as beautiful as the first time I watched it. If you want to see pure, female friendship, this is the movie for you. Friendship void of most of the negative things associated with female friendships. The jealousy, backstabbing and so much more. It’s just three young women who want nothing but the absolute best for each other.
The main reason I started re-watching this is because of Jane. She is a writer for a women’s magazine. She’s basically me. I have a job I didn’t think I’d ever have in this lifetime and it honestly feels like a dream sometimes. She makes me believe anything is possible and she gives me the inspiration to write when I need it. She’s not even my favourite character out of the trio and I love her this much. She is my least favourite out of all three of them and I love her this much! This is a must-watch for anyone who needs to see what good, healthy female friendships should look like.
Enola Holmes 2
I am a sucker for period dramas and movies but I am not the biggest fan of comedy. Enola Holmes found a way to connect the two in a way that I couldn’t object to. The first movie was amazing and this one didn’t disappoint either. It was enthralling and uplifting. It showed that society is and has always been designed to work against women but that doesn’t mean we stop trying. It doesn’t mean we give up.
Elisa and Marcela
No one with a heart can watch this movie and not shed a tear or two. Two lovers separated by distance and things completely out of their control find a way back to each other and try to love each other. They don’t hurt anyone. They just live their lives peacefully with each other but because they are both women, their lives were in constant danger. It is one of the most painful things I’ve ever watched and yet, one of the most beautiful. Love will never not be precious and magnificent.
It’s a lot for a week, I know👀. Let’s just say, I’m sleep-deprived for a reason😉.
