Comfort movies are everything. After a hard day or even a good one, putting something wholesome on has a way of making you feel like you’ve been given a warm hug by the perfect person. Christmas movies are almost always wholesome. They have a way of warming up your heart and making you have some hope in humanity. Holiday rom-coms do all of that while also making you believe a bit in ‘true love‘. Girlily has put together the perfect 12 days of Christmas rom-coms to binge-watch this festive season.
Holidate
The first on our list is Holidate. This movie is funny, relatable on some level and a really amazing watch! Two perfect strangers make a pact to get their families off their backs. They will be each other’s fake partners for every holiday they have to be surrounded by their judgemental family. It seemed like the best plan at the time and for a while it was. Things started to get a bit complicated when feelings started developing between them.
The Princess Switch
Vanessa Hudgens stuns the world with her spectacular acting skills in this movie. She plays two women who live worlds apart but look exactly like each other. One’s a princess and the other a baker. It’s your classic prince and the pauper story but with a twist. This twist includes romance for both women but not with who you would think of at first. We loved almost every second of this. Such a beautiful love story.
Let It Snow
There are a myriad of romances in this movie which makes it a billion times better. So instead of sinking your teeth into just one love story, you get a four-in-one special(we know, four is definitely NOT a myriad😛). There’s conflict, beautiful first crushes, teen angst, chemistry, snow and so much more. It is a beautiful teen Christmas story. Also, for our queer audience/lovers, there’s a sapphic couple whose story is especially sweet.
The Noel Diary
This is a new Netflix movie that holds meaning in every scene. Earlier this month our Assitant Editor let you all know that she would be watching this movie. She did. These are her thoughts.
“It’s a beautiful Christmas rom-com. It has all the typical themes or idiosyncrasies of a rom-com. The somewhat chance encounter, the ‘conflict’ involving both of them and keeping them in close proximity for an amount of time, the ‘slow’ but sure fall for each other and of course, the initial attraction. It’s like I said, a typical rom-com which means I saw a lot of things coming, which is okay for the type of movie it is. Rom-coms are beautiful in their ‘clicheness’. Though generally a nice movie, I felt like some scenes were not clean enough. The acting wasn’t super great but it’s always like a 5-second scene so I was never sure why some things were just a bit off. It was almost perfect but not quite there. Like staring at a twin that is almost identical. You just know something is a bit ‘wrong’. Also, some things happened too quickly which made me pause for a second. I believe realists might find it hard to watch this movie -BUT- It’s a Christmas movie. It’s not meant to give us reality. It’s meant to give us magic and it did just that.”
It gave us some magic, which is why it remains on our list.
Falling For Christmas
This movie is lighthearted and easy to get lost in. This is Lindsay Lohan’s first major role in a long time, and she did an amazing job! The on-screen chemistry between her and the male lead was definitely the highlight of the film. It’s very easy to get lost in the movie and forget about reality. In all, it’s an amazing movie to watch with your family, friends or significant other.
A Cinderella Story: Christmas wish
There are a lot of cinderella movies out there. Each a little different from the last. This has a Christmas twist to it. This is perfect for any Cinderella fan who would love to watch a Christmas romance as well. We grew up watching Disney so seeing two Disney stars as the leads was enough to draw us in. Everything else kept us watching till the very end.
Single All The Way
Most people go through life suffering with the weight of their family’s expectations on their shoulders and that weight feels even heavier during the holidays. Peter is a prime example of this. He suffers through his family’s constant worries about his love life that he’s so exhausted and has had enough. To avoid judgement he asks his best friend to pose as his boyfriend. Whatever you’re thinking right now isn’t going to happen the exact way you’re thinking about it 😉.
Christmas Full Of Grace
This isn’t the best movie out there. It’s also not the best acting but it’s so all over the place it’s completely ridiculous. You’ll laugh. You’ll laugh a lot. You’ll wonder for Garça’s sanity and you’ll wait for the inevitable fall. You’ll wait for our leads to start falling in love. Also, picture another fake-date scenario. We love us a fake date. We love us a fake date to make the family go away. We love us a fake date that turns into a real love story.
The Holiday Calendar
Kat Graham is one of the best actresses out there. She’s been amazing since vampire diaries. Though the roles she’s played since then have been the complete opposite of “Bonnie”, she’s been doing spectacular work. She’s a photographer in this movie who gets a special Christmas calendar that gives one prediction each day. The calendar predicts romance and it was right. It just wasn’t with who she suspected.
Christmas With You
Music. What is Christmas without some music? A pop star Angelina is forced to make a Christmas song against her will so she decides to try to connect with her fans. She finds a teenage girl singing her song and decides to make her Christmas wish come true by going to see her. She didn’t expect love to come with the inspiration she was hoping to find.
The Knight Before Christmas
Vanessa Hudgens stars in yet another Christmas movie and as usual, she kills it. A medieval knight magically appears in the 21st century and becomes a young science teacher’s responsibility. Slowly, they find a way to love each other despite their obvious differences. It’s truly a beautiful watch. If wholesome had a face, it would be this.
Dash And Lily
This last one isn’t a movie. It’s a mini-series that is precious in every way. It deserves to be on this list. In a way, it holds more weight than all the other movies on this list. Maybe it’s because it’s a series, meaning we get to spend more time with the characters, we get to fall more in love with them and we get to root more intensely for them. Dash and Lily, on paper, don’t work but in real life? They’re a spectacular mess. The best juxtaposition you could ever wish to come alive. Only cynics and asshats would hate this show. THIS is our professional opinion.
Merry Christmas🎄 and happy watching!!
